hi, i am trying to get either krabber or grip to work as a normal user
rather than having to rip mp3s as root everytime which is what i have to
do at the moment, apart from the hassle of starting a new x session and
the principle involved (why be root if it's not system maintenance?) all
files created have root ownership and this leaves me more work! i have
worked out - i think- that the problem has to do with how progs such as
cdparanoia and cdrecord access the cdrom drive and it's permissions, i
posted to the newbie group but i got no reply so i am posting it here:

could some kind soul tell me where i have gone wrong in my thinking:

1. cdparanoia will run as the user calling the program if not setuid or
setgid - is this right?

2. if my user - bascule- is a member of group 'cdrom' then whatever
group 'cdrom' has permission to do, bascule does too - is this right?

3. if /dev/scd0 has permissions 660 with owner root and group cdrom then
group 'cdrom' has the same access to /dev/scd0 as root - is this right?

4. therefore when bascule runs cdparanoia, cdparanoia has access to
/dev/scd0 without havingto be setuid - is this right?

the point being that without being setuid cdparanoia doesn't work and i
can't see why

please help

bascule
