One hour?? My observations differ.. you can do all that and more in less
than a few minutes on Linux.. no need to play with TCP/IP, NetBUI, WINS
etc. etc.. 

About the ethernet card, look at the h/w database b4 you buy somethign.. if
you had any 3COM card, that wouldnt' have been a problem.. dont' blame
linux for not providing drivers, blame the h/w vendors.. people around the
world are trying their best to get all possible h/w to work in linux..
please learn to appreciate that first. Its not like NT/2000 for which the
h/w vendors are dying to provide support.. no matter how crappy!!
