BIND = Berkerly Internet Naming Demon Its the first and best DNS :) Basically, if your running a network with lots of machines then this little critter is for you (for small networks I usually just put them all in /etc/hosts). Its also handy if you're registering an internet domain (I don't know if it's universal, but to register a proper domain in Australia I've got to supply the addresses of two DNS servers with the domain information listed on them) OK..ad break over...basically what BIND does is provide a centralised system so other boxes can resolve IP addresses from Hostnames (and vice versa). It's pretty much what allowes the Net to operate the way it does (or one of the things at least). Hope this Helps (PS O'Reilly has a very good book on it too...:) AG On Thu, 28 Sep 2000, Mike & Tracy Holt wrote: > Unix version of DNS - no? > > Mike > > >-----Original Message----- > >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of faisal > >Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2000 7:51 AM > >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >Subject: [expert] bind8 program > > > > > >Why do we use bind program ? > > > > > > > >
