I previously stated that after building and installing XFree86-4.0.1
I lost the ability to run konsole.

It is more extensive than that.
I cannot run ANY KDE app. I have been trying to rebuild and install
all the kde-1.1.2 src rpms and have thus far succeeded with kdelibs
and kdesupport. When I try to build kdebase-1.1.2-61mdk, however,
it craps out during the configure process with a message that
it cannot link a kde program and tells me to be sure that I am
using the same compiler that I used to build qt. I did build
qt-1.44 prior to all this as well, with the same compiler. Same
compiler for kdelibs and kdesupport too.

I then decided to try installing the i586 binary of kdebase but
it tells me that it is failing dependencies for libXpm.so.4 and
libvga.so.1. They both ARE on the system and they are in /usr/lib
and /usr/lib is in ld.so.conf and I have run ldconfig. They exist.

When I run rpm -Uvh --nodeps kdebase, it installs but then I get a
bunch of error messages about fonts:

mkfontdir: Duplicate font names
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-8
        heb6x13.pcf.gz 6x13-ISO8859-8.pcf.gz
mkfontdir: unable to process font
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/6x13-ISO8859-8.pcf.gz, skipping
mkfontdir: Duplicate font names
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-80-iso8859-8
        8x13-ISO8859-8.pcf.gz heb8x13.pcf.gz
etc, etc,

and then it ends with:

mkfontdir: unable to process font
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/7x14-JISX0201.1976-0.pcf.gz, skipping
var/tmp/rpm-tmp.64770: line 4: 18109 Segmentation fault (core
dumped) /usr/bin/update-menus

Great. So what is this? Is kde-1.1.2 incompatible with XFree86-4.0.1?
Any ideas?
