You can simply press Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace to restart X incase it freezes.. 

Also, try changing your window manager if you get a freeze.. i.e if it
freezes under KDE , try GNOME the next time.. I found GNOME 1.2 to be much
more stable than KDE 1.1.2.. and KDE 2 beta is also ultra-stable.. no
crashes so far (over a month i am using it)
