No. Sorry, I didn't read ALL of the post. Adding the line to /etc/conf.modules forces the kernel to use the ide-scsi drivers for the device, but does not mount the device as a file system. Normally there is no reason (AFAIK) to have both devices scsi, so you would leave the ATAPI support in, and get it to drive the cdrom that way. In the end, any device that holds a filesystem (network, removable, local) needs to have the file system mounted. You should have two directories in /mnt (normally cdrom and cdrom2, but you can make cdrw or whatever you like) each with their own entry in /etc/fstab. btw, ide-scsi IS in the mandrake default kernels, I only use ditribution-standard kernels on my home machine since I reinstall it quite often to check different distros out, and since it multiboots to NT and 98, I don't have enough space to keep kernel source lying around. As I was saying, I have a CD-RW on this machine, and Mandrake 7.1 picks it up during install and it works immediately, Redhat requires you to add the line to /etc/conf.modules, and adding the drive after Mandrake 7.1 installation would also require this.
