Well, I have been considering going to the ultimate source of the source, but I have also been wanting the convenience of an rpm install (so I don't ALWAYS get unneeded dependency problems with other rpms - not seeing XFree installed when it really is). It has been a while since I did an XFree source tarball compile. With the source rpm, when (IF) it builds, you get a host of convenient packages: server, modules, this, that, etc, from which you only install those you want/need. When you build the tarball, does it also produce individually installable binaries and libs or does it install the whole ball of wax - everything built for an i386 system? praedor
