I've changed monitors several times due to demoing linux in different places. I use linuxconf to set the boot mode to 3 then when I start linux with the new monitor, I run xf86config from the console. When I have X running with startx they way I want, I use linuxconf to reset the boot mode back to 5, and I'm ready for the next demo. If I',m going to be using this monitor for demos at another date I save my config file with a name that IDs the location, then rename my original config file back and I'm ready for home use again.
