The only thing I can think of is that the headers are living somewhere unusal (usr/local/include) or the rpms failed to update the ld.so.cache or ld.so.conf (the files that describe where libraries live)... Though I can't really imagine why ld.so.conf would have anything to do with it. You may also want to open up the configure script and find out exactly what it is looking for ... there is some weird magic that goes on in a configure script, but with a little patience they are not too ureadable. Fire up emacs and search for the error string.
