Okay...I ran the coax to my mdk box locale and moved the modem...of course I have to move the line as it's strung across the living room and up two flights of stairs...aha, it works. Go figure...It's got to have something to do with the length of the cable that connects from the cable modem to the NIC or else the cable has some degradation along it's length. The LinkSys is brand new and supposedly linux tested. I also have an onboard NIC in this box by DAVICOM and it also runs fine. I origranally mounted a small 8-line wall box to run a line from the modem to my hub and then down the 50ft cable to the win machine, but there was NO signal then...damn cable has to be the problem and the actual wall box was also bad. No firewall because this machine is only hooked up while I'm on. I will be networking the machines again when I'm comfortable with Linux/Unix type OS's. I don't fully understand ipchains and ipmasq'ing. I want all the machines to "route" via this machine. But I also want to be able to compile a new kernel. I have tried that a million times and I'm always missing this or that .h file or this or that .c file...I used the development setting to install mandrake from the ISO images I burned...re-installed, still no good...I can't figure out what I'm missing...but until I do the machines will remain connected or unconnected as they are...now I must move the modem back to the other machine to avoid the grief that will cause if I forget.
