The thing was that one of the scripts was trying to use wvdial to connect, and it is not installed. I found out when I saw the ifcfg-ppp0 file that had an WVxxxx=something entry and after I removed it, the ifup ppp0 command worked. I also had problems with the lan and I found out that it was not setting a default route. The eth0 device was up, but no default route had been set.
