Anyway, what you want is:

xinit /usr/bin/startkde

(man xinit)

and for something really off-topic:

Alternatively, if you are already in runlevel5, want to test another
desktop, but just don't feel like loggiing out:

press Ctrl-Alt-F1
login
run: 
xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/blackbox -- :1
      (or any other desktop/
       WM here)

Ctrl-Alt-F7 brings you back to your original console.
