I had similar problems with 7.1. I posted my fix to this list several months ago. Search the archives for Adaptec and IBM. Basically my problem was that Mandrake is using too old of a aic7xxx driver and the driver doesn't like the new LVD drives. Get the latest driver from the maintainer of the aic7xxx code, rebuild the kernel, and everything is great.
