Maybe talk you out of it (grin)?  Why don't you simply tar them and
store them as a tar on your VFAT partition?  What I do is put copies
of this stuff on my /home partition and then I just don't format that
when doing an install.  Ultimately this stuff gets burned onto a CD
for backup.
