I'm no expert on this, but I'll have a guess that you named your printer something other than "lp". lpr uses "lp" as its default printer, and gets upset if it can't find one! I know that at install time it tells you to use a pipe "|" to asign more than one name if you want something more descriptive. eg "hp1100|lp" allows you to print to "hp1100" but lpr still finds "lp" and both are the same printer.
