x doesn't load at all.  I'm not real familiar with Linux, but I get the
equivelent of a dos prompt with the penguin at top.  I can then login and do
normal stuff, but no GUI.

I lost your original message.

Does X load at all?

Go to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login, and run:
xinit /usr/X11R6bin/twm
(or use balckbox / wmaker / icewm / whatever if it is installed on your
system instead of twm)

See if anything gets loaded
