Hi, I'm having some problems getting CUPS working with Mdk7.2 (download
edition). On install CUPS found my Canon BJC-210SP fine, but the test
page didn't print out properly - looked to me like the test page was a
postscript file which the printer didn't like. I thought this was
something I could probably fix later, so I let it go. After install
however, the CUPS daemon won't even run, which means none of the config
tools work, and I'm not sure where to go about fixing it. Trying to
start the CUPS daemon with 'service cups start' seems to start it - I
get no error messages - but it dies almost immediately. Each time I try
to start the daemon I get this in /var/log/cups/error_log:

I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:43 +1000] Listening to 0:631
I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:43 +1000] ReadConfiguration() Configured for up to
100 clients.
I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:53 +1000] LoadPPDs: Wrote //etc/cups/ppds.dat (1220
PPDs)...
E [22/Nov/2000:23:34:53 +1000] PID 6331 stopped with status 1!

You can see how fast it dies. Can anybody tell me what 'status 1' is?
Can't seem to find any mention of it in any docs.

Trying to print, the print job seems to vanish, doesn't show up in
/var/spool/cups at all, and both 'lpq' and 'lpq-cups' show nothing.
'lpq-lpd' gives me:

Bad termcap entry
lpq-lpd: lp: unknown printer

Yes I have the lpd stuff installed, but not running, I installed it in
case CUPS didn't work, but now I can't seem to get it working either
because CUPS takes over all printing. Is there a conflict in having both
lpd and CUPS installed, even if they aren't both running?

I've setup postfix, fetchmail, recompiled the kernel, and run the
Bastille scripts on this machine. Don't know if that's relevant, but
other than that it's plain Mdk7.2.

Also, this printer was being shared with a Win95 machine via Samba under
Mdk7.1 - the printer connected to the Linux box. Pretty much just copied
my old Samba config files into Mdk7.2. Now the Win95 machine seems to be
able to send print jobs to the Linux box, but they get stuck there
without going to the printer. In /var/spool/cups I get the file
'00000000', which is a print job from the Win95 machine - 'strings
00000000' gives me 'Untitled - Notepad' (no prizes for guessing what I
was trying to print from Win95 :-) I assume this is because the CUPS
daemon isn't running, so can't process it.

Any ideas on how to get CUPS working? Failing that, how do I get lpd
working?

Thanks,
Tom Massey
