okay, this is what i have discovered, in user file manager altering the
properties of an application desktop config file in
/.kde/share/applnk/...../app.desktop does indeed do the same as going into
settings>configure>file associations,
however to have an application associated with all files one has to go the
latter route in order to set the file name pattern associated with
all/allfiles, unfortunately if left blank it has no effect, if assigned to *
then all files will have this association as well as their existing ones but
they will all have the same icon as as that defined for all/allfiles which
really doesn't look nice,
which means i can't do what i want, which is to have an editor associated for
all unknown files so that if i don't know what a file is i can load it into
an editor to see if that gives me a clue, without having to go open
with>browse, windows has 'send to' off the right click menu i thought i could
get kde to have the same functionality but i can't see how, dragging to an
icon on the desktop requires visible desktop and dragging to the task bar can
be hit and miss with those small icons i like to have in order to maximise
deskspace.

anyone not asleep after reading this who has an idea how i may do what i want
please chip in,

bascule
