I have now been working on the installation of the nVidia drivers for
XFree86-4.0.1 for a week. And I believe, I am close to have it made
working. BUT:

First my system:
Athlon (Thunderbird) 800Mhz on Asus AV7 (KT133 based)
        380 MB RAM
WinFast Geforce 256 DDR graphics card, 32 MB

I have been trying all the recipies, I have been able to find on the
net, and ended up with the following

1) in modules.conf use the option
     options agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1
2) Mesa RPM uninstalled
but Mesa-common still there (GLU stuff)
3) Install XFree86-server-4.0.1 RPM
4) make link
   ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 /etc/X11/X
5) now the nv driver, which comes with XFree is working nicely, no problem
6) wipe out:
   /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.* stuff
   /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extension/libGLcore.a
   /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extension/libglx.a
7) Install NVIDIA_kernel-0.95
gives some warnings with I neglect (as suggested bby some of the
        Mini-Howtos)
8) Install NVIDIA_GLX-0.95
9) edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and change to
   Driver "nvidia"
   Load "glx"

Now the result is, that:
1) invoking 'X' directly, works without a problem
2) running startx works:
kde comes up, and I can even invoke some of the Mesa Demos:
for example, bounce. it is clearly accelerated (very fast!, definitely
faster than with the nv driver)
for others (morph3d) everything (except of the mouse) freezes, and I
   have to hard-reset the machine.
3) kdm crashes with a segmentation error
4) xdm crashes rigth after a user having logged in
   the xdm error log says:
    cat: write error: Broken pipe
    xdm error SetPerClientsControl failed

Any suggestions, what I could try?
