Dear Charles: A million thanks! To switch back and forth between KDE and Gnome using KDM, first type your user name and password, THEN select your desktop. How right you are! And I was selecting the desktop first, then typing my user name/password. Just tested it both ways. Works perfectly. Amazing how a little help like this can save you from insanity. Thanks again.
