Can you type "ifconfig" and see whether there is a section beginning
with "lo"?

Try to set "NETWORKING=yes" in /etc/sysconfig/network and "ONBOOT=yes"
in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo. Enter

   service network restart

to activate this. Send me the mentioned files when this does not help.

This "lo" is the so-called loopback device and this emulates a network
consisting of only the local machine and this makes it possible for
programs which are made for networks to run without network.
