Ok... just d/l'ed and installed Java2 Runtime Environment
(j2re-1_3_0-linux-rpm.bin) and still cannot pull up applets... BAH!!! Maybe
I need to downgrade to 7.1.....

You probably don't have a java runtime environment installed (jre)  You can
get one from http://java.sun.com/ or http://www.blackdown.org/  I myself
would recommend the Sun version.  Just make sure you read all of the
documentation pertaining to installation before you attempt to install it.
