By the way, did you solve your ac97 alsa issue? Hello. It doesn't appear to be qt opengl-related. I have the qtgl libs installed on both system, in any case. I have also done a search for the libqgl files and they exist in the qt2 directory (I also set the QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt2 variable before trying to build 3dom. It finds the proper qt libs and doesn't complain during configure). As for the ac97 sound thing, it is solved and working. Whatever the problem was with the two pci soundcards I tried (AudioPCI and SB PCI 128), it doesn't exist for the ac97 - no strange static. It took loading (via modprobe) snd-card-via686a - this loads a host of modules - and then loading snd-pcm-oss (without this one, it doesn't work). Then not only changing settings for the alsa mixer (via either amixer or alsamixer), which is not enough, but also unmuting everything. Saving the new settings with alsactl (requiring an "alsactl restore" after every reboot)...THEN sound works fine. What a pain. The ASCII graphic alsamixer doesn't, apparently, allow for unmuting, just setting the levels. You can do it all with amixer with a little more effort - and in any case, you will have to use amixer anyway to unmute everything. Points: if alsa is going to be the default sound system for Mandrake, then it needs to install in an UNMUTED state AND have the mixer settings set to, at least, a midrange level across the board so sound works right off. It would also be nice to have a graphical kde/gnome, etc, frontend to amixer that handles everything - unmuting and muting included. Alsa is too much trouble out of the box for many/most new users. I am not a new user, but alsa is still a pain to setup when it is entirely unnecessary. praedor -- Against stupidity, even the gods futiliy contend
