I have disabled aRts with no effect on the slow startup of apps. I have also found that if I login to failsafe (xterm) and then run any kde app, they start up within 2 to 3 seconds, just like before I made the real mistake of actually doing a Mandrake 7.2 install. Under KDE or not, ALL gnome/gtk apps start up within seconds. Only kde apps take 20 to 30 seconds to start. I have removed all sound modules and nothing changes. There is no process listed by top or kpm that appears to be a likely culprit. KDE itself, in the background of a full Mandrake 7.2 install is the problem. Gnome is fine, all gnome apps are fine. Gtk apps are fine. KDE apps are fine UNTIL I start kde, then they become intolerably slow to start. praedor
