It's probably the 3CoM nic.
I've encountered problems with 3COM's nics on my desktop-
dropping packets, errors, collisions, etc.
I tried another NIC (generic cheapo) and haven't had any problems since.
It's unfortunate that 3COM's cards are so expensive.
In my laptop I use a D-link
