To all those who are having problems with cdrecord under 7.2, I have
found a workable solution (just in time, I am going away and people want
to use our CDwriting server).
The solution was to compile a kernel (2.2.18) from vanilla (in my case
also patched for ReiserFS) source, remembering of course to enable scsi
support and ide-scsi emulation.
Other possible solutions I have tried that failed were:
-Compile an i486 kernel from the mandrake supplied source (thought the
bug with i586
ata drivers and WD drives might be the problem)
-Install a 2.2.16-9mdk kernel from 7.1 updates (I think this might work
for people not using ReiserFS, see my previous post on "kernel: init
not found").
-Install the kernel-linus supplied with 7.2, but this of course does not
have ReiserFS. This should also work, although using a 2.2.16-9mdk
kernel might be better in terms of hardware support.
I had also wanted to try the kernel from Redhat 6.2 initially, but once
again, since I am running ReiserFS on this box ....
So if you use ReiserFS, take this opportunity to compile yourself a nice
lean kernel, maybe a monolithic one with only the devices you currently
have - which means you don't have to bother with your /etc/modules.conf
file too much ...
If you don't use ReiserFS, please test the other options (the ones that
are easiest for you to try) and post here so we can firstly find what
the easiest solution is, and secondly that we can maybe try and track
down the real problem.
I will be away (might still be able to read mail) until 8 January 2001,
so email is not guaranteed to reach me before then.
Enjoy the festive season - it looks like we won't have to worry about
upgrading to the 2.4 kernel this year !

Buchan
