I'm finally going to take the plunge. I've downloaded the new binaries
from XFree (4.02) for my MD 7.1 box with the original kernel. tnt2 m64
atc 32m agp card. There's been lots of threads & discussions bout this
card (lots of "uh-oh's", too) - is there now a single source faq/how-to
for what I'm about to do? I made a single, half-hearted stab when 4.0
first came out & wasn't very happy with it, so I went back to 3.3.6 (as
lots of us seemed to do at the time). Planning on using Xinstall.sh.
I've copied /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6 as suggested for backup. It's too
cold to do much else than have a good ole geek-attack anyway.

I've got the Readme/FAQ from August 2000 for the Ver 0.9-5 based on
4.01. Are there still Mesa conflicts?

ps. Currently, running Helix-Gnome (with Evo 0.6 installed but not
necessarily running) is oddly unstable & subject to hard freeezes -
power off only. It's random & I don't have a clue what causes it. KDE
1.1.2 is totally stable, however. The logs are not shouting out to me on
this, but they'd probly need a hammer, anyway. X - if X-related - is a
fine art that I've never mastered - just been lucky, I think. I'm
blindly hoping that this upgrade will be a good thing.
