Hi...

I'm having trouble understanding why the "products" of RPMs and sources (in
this case, anyway) should be so different...

Linux-Mandrake 7.2 "openssl" and "openssl-devel" RPMs (version 0.9.5)
----------------------------------------------------
These install a few binaries, two libraries (libssl.so and libcrypto.so), and
documentation.

OpenSSL sources (version 0.9.6)
-----------------------
These install what the INSTALL doc refers to as "toolkits" (libssl.a and
libcrypto.a), as well as a few binaries and documentation.

In preparation for building Apache with SSL / PHP/ MySQL from sources, I
removed the OpenSSL RPMs from my LM7.2 system thinking that whatever
functionality went with them would be restored after building the OpenSSL
sources.

What actually happened was that I wound up with a functioning Apache / SSL /
PHP / MySQL install -- but parts of KDE had stopped working. The items KDE
needed were the two OpenSSL libraries: libssl.so and libcrypto.so.

I reinstalled the RPMs and now things appear to be back to normal.

Can you please tell me why the sources would not both produce the libraries
needed by KDE?

Is there often a discrepancy between the products of sources and what gets
installed via RPM?

Many thanks.

M.
