Yesterday, whilst building XFree86-4.0.2, my system went nutso after it
finished (not yet installed). It turned out that my keyboard chose that time
to give up the ghost.

Anyway, before I realised what the problem was, I reinstalled kde-2.1,
deleted my .kde directory, etc, trying to get things working again (it was
really bizarre).

I finally got things worked out but now am having problems with kde.
Specifically, my desktop. CDROM, floppy, Zip, dos partition icons do not
appear. When I create them (via create new) they don't work either. I
create a new floppy device on my desktop, all the settings appear correct but
when I select it, nothing happens. If, on the other hand, I open an xterm
and go to /mnt/floppy, lo and behold, there is "stuff" there - the stuff on
the inserted floppy.

Same thing goes for CDROM. I can cd to the CDROM directory and navigate via
xterm but creating a device on my desktop, it does nothing. Same for
creating a new Home and Startup folder on my desktop.

My trash icon also doesn't work. I can move items into the trash and it
responds but 1)I cannot view what is in the trash by clicking on the trash
icon, and 2)I cannot delete the damn trash icon to recreate it. So far the
ONLY device/icon on my desktop that works is the Printer.

All the devices that are created, even when by me the user, are owned by root.

How do I make new home, startup, cdrom, etc items on my desktop so that they
actually work?
