Simon,
 please use the command update-menus -v from a Virtual terminal as both your
user and also as root. boot into x and see if your problem is resolved.

Check and be sure that rpms for helixcode mc,mcserv,and gmc are all installed
from helixcode NOT FROM MANDRAKE
