I've just spent the last 3 hours fighting a STINKING windows box.
It has thus far won.
Here's the deal. I have a really nice linux pppd server (aka RAS)
set up, and it works fine when linux dials in.
However, when whinedbarf 98 dials in to it, no matter what I do
it insists on going directly to ppp. And I cannot get pap or
chap authentication to work to save my life.
Using: mgetty+sendfax
Call the user bozoppp. His shell is pppd (full path, of course).
Mgetty is compiled with autoppp enabled, and configured to use
it (I've also tried it with autoppp disabled, which is what proved
the utter stupidity of W98 w.r.t. login scripting).
assume his password is windows=retard
in my chap-secrets AND pap-secrets files I have:
bozoppp * windows=retard *
(I've also tried 'bozoppp * "" *' in the chap-secrets file)
If I start pppd with authentication NOT required, of course the
w98 box can get in (but then, so can ANYONE else).
If I start pppd with 'auth login -pap -chap' it STILL requires
chap authentication, and fails.
HELP! If I cannot get this working then they will put in
a WinNT server! And linux will have failed me!
(Of course, the fault is probably entirely with the W98 box, but
since 'well, it works fine when we dial in an ISP, how can it
be the windows box that is the problem?' - gag)
Here's what I want to happen (if possible):
linux box presents ONLY a login/password request.
remote machine logs in (as bozoppp, in this case)
pppd starts, no authentication required (for now)
