I was able to pull the 2.4.0 kernel off of the main site
(www.kernel.org), patch it, and get it to run (sort of) on my system.
Here is what I have gained by doing this so far:
1. On kernel 2.2.17 (the one that came with 7.2) I could not get ide3
to work on neither a Promise Ultra66 nor a Promise Ultra100 when I had a
45 GB 7200 RPM IBM drive on it. The system would just hang after
listing the IRQ assignments for the IDE buses. When I tried out the
2.4.0 kernel I was able to get this to work.
2. The performance feels a bit snappier.
Here is a list of problems that I have come across by doing this so far:
1. I started experiencing intermittent slow downs and freezes under X
running KDE 2.0. The first time around I first noticed a problem when I
looked at x11amp and I noticed that the little bars where moving rather
slowly. I then switch to another virtual desktop that I had Netscape,
Gaim, and Licq running. After I switched noticed that I still had mouse
control, but everything else seemed frozen except for the clock in the
lower right hand corner on the KDE bar. Clicking on anything including
the clock did not do anything though. I did a CTRL+ALT+F10, switched to
another virtual terminal and then back. Then I hit CTRL+C to shut down
X. I was able to restart X (startx) and get things going again. The
second time around was a bit more sever. I was ripping an audio CD with
xcdroast when it the problems occurred. When I tried to shut down X it
complained that it had problems shutting down properly though I was left
outside of X. The virtual terminal stop responding to input, so I
switched to another virtual terminal and tried to log in. I was able to
get the username in, but it hung when I hit enter. I could still switch
between virtual terminals, but that was about all that I could do. I
CRTL+ALT+DELET to try to get the system to do a graceful shutdown, but
the system wouldn't go down or even start to. I ended up just power
cycling it. (I have only been running for a couple of days so this
isn't a very good track record at all, especially seeing that things
where pretty rock solid before hand.)
2. When type in 'init 0' as root, the machine does a graceful shutdown,
but then reboot instead of turning off, just like when I type in 'init
6' on other UNIX's and Linux's.
Here is my hardware configuration (if it helps any):
1. 800 MHz Althon Slot-A (BOX). (L2 ECC enabled in BIOS.)
2. 256 MB PC133 ECC Micron RAM. (ECC mode enabled in BIOS.)
3. ASUS K7V m/b that I reflashed the BIOS on in order to get proper ECC
support. (k7v1007.awd)
4. Promise Ultra66 controller, 1.42 (Linux) BIOS. (ide4 and ide5).
5. Promise Ultra100 controller, 2.x (default) BIOS. (ide2 and ide3).
6. 3c905c NIC.
7. In-Win Q500 case w/ 300W P/S and a 3 1/2 in. fan mounted in front of
the hard drive cage.
8. Matrox G100 AGP video card w/ 8 MB RAM.
9. 4 IBM DTLA-307045 disk drives. (/dev/hde, /dev/hdg, /dev/hdi,
/dev/hdk.) I am using one drive as my main drive and the other three
temporarily for testing until I feel comfortable with making one big
software RAID 5 array.
10. HP 9100i CD-RW (on /dev/hda).
11. Internal IDE ZIP drive (on /dev/hdc).
I am attaching /var/dmesg and the config file that I used when I compile
the kernel. (BTW I patched in reiserfs support to get access to my
existing partitions. I plan on using ext2 for software RAID unless it
suddenly becomes safe and practical to use reiserfs for that.)
