I'm using ppp without a problem (you mean ppp not pppd right?).

It's up for days on a hybrid cable modem connection (dial out, receive via
Ethernet) without any problems whatsoever.

This is utilizing a stock 7.2 installation with all the applied updates.

You might want to look else where or enable debug mode and look at the logs.

Subject: [expert] pppd becoming unstable

My ppp connection has become very haphazard.
At times I will have to kill, restart, dozens of times before it takes.
It will work fine but when it dies for whatever reason it now
becomes a major chore to get it back up again.
ps ax shows it running and external modem lights
are all on but no connection to the outside world.
Lm 7.2 with various updates but no cooker stuff this time !
kernel-2.2.17-21mdk
ppp-2.4.0-3mdk

My isp hasnt changed anything as far as I can tell.

Any help to track this down would be appreciated
to lessen the need for a clean install.

This all worked fine for several months.
