The "append=2" didn't work. So I uninstalled the kernel 2.4.0 RPMs; and
installed the latest 2.4.0-4 RPMs from Mandrake Update.
Worked fine; boots up properly and everything. The compile is a bit odd - I
get these unresolved errors, referencing PCMCIA, when I do a "make
modules_install".

Since I don't use PCMCIA (it's not a laptop), and have turned off all PCMCIA
options in the config, I ignored it and went on my merry way. :-)

It was a bit disconcerting, tho - not seeing the usual "Installing modules
under /lib/modules ... " statements.

End result - I'm running 2.4 now. Don't notice any difference between this
and my 2.2.17 yet, but ....

And you.
