I'll bet the sound driver is probing the modem's I/O address incorrectly.

Why don't you disable the computer's ON BOARD COM2 port, then set your modem
for I/O 2F8 & IRQ-3 which is far more "standard" and expected by Linux.

You'll have to change /dev/modem to point to /dev/ttyS1 instead of
/dev/ttyS2 as it's showing up now, but that's about it.

Also your NIC is utilizing the address of I/O 330, which is primarily used
for Midi.

This will again cause problems. 330 is "understood" to be reserved for Midi,
just as 201 is reserved for joysticks, etc.

The 330 address will also cause problems with sndconfig.

BTW: the system does not "see" the modem, rather it understands the I/O port
it appears on.

To "activate" your modem you merely change the softlink from /dev/modem to
point to whatever the COM port address it appears under linux... you can do
this manually or from Drakconf.

I.E.

/dev/ttyS0 = COM1: 3F8, IRQ4
/dev/ttyS1 = COM2: 2F8, IRQ3
/dev/ttyS2 = COM3: 3E8, IRQ4
/dev/ttyS3 = COM4: 2E8, IRQ3

See the problem? Your modem is not "at" any standard configuration.

COM3 & COM4 are problematic because by default they share the IRQ with COM1
& COM2. This is why you should avoid "non-standard" port addresses unless
you -REALLY- know what you are doing.

And even then you'll probably have some conflicts.

Subject: [expert] No modem after running sndconfig

Ok, more details on my modem problem.

System info...

1. LM 7.2 2.4.0 Kernel with latest modutils Intel Pentium 133 with 96MB RAM
(slow)
2. USR 56k Internal ISA PNP (not a winmodem) (IO 3E8, IRQ 3) System doesn't
see it.
3. SoundBlaster 16 ( IO 220, IRQ 5) It works fine.
4. SMC NIC (Old Ultra, IO 330, IRQ 11) It works fine.
5. Serial mouse on COM1
6. Printer, scanner, zip drive and CDROM burner.

My dilemma...

Fresh install of LM 7.2. Freshly compiled 2.4.0 kernel with all the proper
modules. Modem worked before I ran sndconfig to configure my sound card.
Now the system doesn't see the modem. I checked /proc/isapnp and the modem
is there. However /proc/ioports and interrupts don't show the modem
resources being allocated?

What I have done so far...

1. Modified modules.conf so that sound modules don't load at boot. Checking
/proc/ioports and interrupts show that there are no soundcard resources
allocated. Lsmod shows no sound stuff loaded. Still no modem though.

2. Used isapnp tool and tried every possible IO and IRQ setting for the
modem. System still doesn't see the modem.

3. Unload and reloaded isapnp module. It detects the modem. But no
resources allocated.

4. Relocated the card to a different slot on the motherboard. No good.

5. Got an education on how PNP works in Linux?

Conclusions....

1. I can reinstall LM 7.2 recompile the kernel and live without sound. I
don't think so !

2. I can buy a new USR Pro Modem ! Which I did :)

3. Be real stubborn about it and make it work like it should.

I choose #3 Any takers??
