I've seen this many times.

Remove all .*.summary files from any netscape mail
directory.  These directories are typically named
~/ns_imap or ~/nsmail

I suspect but can't prove that these files become
corrupted by running more than one instance of
netscape.

I have alsow seen similar problems caused by the
~/.netscape/preferences.js
