Thanks for the input. I tried it and I still can't boot with the new kernel
- `make install` created the system map & boot image in /boot.
- I removed the initrd line and made sure the image line pointed to the fresh
image
- I ran lilo just to be sure all was well
- I rebooted and got the nasty kernel panic:
VFS: Cannon open root device "307" or 03:07
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:07
