Seriously, I would do a traditional manual build and see how that goes. 
Scripts like buildkernel work fine once they are well sorted.  But 2.4
is so new and different that there is a very good chance that
buildkernel is the source of your problems.

Bugger this listserver - the replyto is a real disaster if you want to
post back to the list, why cant they sort it out, surely a Linux
distributer can drive an listserver, most others seem to do so ok, even
