I don't know what your problem is but here might be some work arounds.

My screen does the same thing sometimes and usually wiggling the wheel
on my IntelliMouse does the trick.  But I think my mouse is about shot.

If Control-Alt-Backspace doesn't work you will have to get access to
the system from another place but the main monitor.  If it's on a LAN
ssh/telnet in from another system.  Or set up getty on a serial port
and plug another system to the serial port and log in from there.

Else, change your default init level to 3 and don't boot into the
console.  Use the starx command to launch X.
