I guess that this is a case where the boot disk is not enough: you need a
rescue disk. The installation cd could be used as a rescue disk, but I do
not know exactly how... Try to boot from it and search for the help.

Last thing: next time you will remember that before you get rid of a
working kernel you must be sure that the new one is working...
