Well, I've been working for some time at getting a compile of 2.4.1 up and
running, and after a good deal of mucking around, I've figured out the
following.

When I installed LM 7.2 originally, the grub boot line for the linux kernel
included the option "vga=788", so I (of course) blindly copied it to the line
I added for booting the new 2.4.1 kernel. I've been trying to get the kernel
to boot, and my impression has been that although it boots, something is not
working right with my video system because the monitor clicks and then is
black, but the disk drive continues to spin as though all is booting.

I tried removing the vga=788, and lo! and behold 2.4.1 boots just find and
everything seems to come up. I just have two problems now that I am again
stuck on:

1. WHY doesn't the vga mode change? Not changing the vga mode means that I
don't get the nifty MDK bootstrap progress display (although the standard
linux boot display does scroll across the screen). It's not a major deal on
the boot, but I am wondering what else might not be working.

My hardware is an ASUS CUSL2 MB, Pentium III processor, Guillemot Prophet II
MX AGP video card. In the configuration, I enabled DRI and included the RAGE
drivers and the Radeon drivers (even though I don't have either of those
boards) as modules. I DID NOT compile frame buffer support in (because none
of the allowed drivers matched my video card) but I note that in the default
MDK install, there are frame buffer devices in /dev so maybe I need
that...and should just add in all the video cards and let the kernel try to
find one that works?

2. Networking: My primary mail account is via @Home, on mail server "mail". I
connect via a Linksys cable modem-router so my computer is not directly
connected to the cable modem. When booted in 2.4.1, KMail gives me an "error
connecting to mail" error when I try to get mail. However, I CAN get mail
from a second server (outside of @Home) that I use as another POP server for
business purposes. I can ping "mail" just fine, I can surf the web, ifconfig
shows the ethernet interface is working fine, so it is JUST the connection to
@home's server. If I reboot to 2.2.17 it works just fine. Any ideas
appreciated.

Thanks
Neal
