We use a 500 Celeron as a samba 2.0.7 Primary Domain Controller, and for
the majority of the file-serving tasks. It has been running with a
HPT366 PCI IDE controller (which has worked very well), but we were
running out of space, so we decided to get a hpt370-based PCI IDE
controller (the Iwill one) and some more disks.

The people whos data will be living on the disks wanted to have RAID, so
we got 2 IBM45GXPs.

I have compiled a 2.4.1 kernel with support for the HPT366 controller
and RAID0, made new device files for the hdi-hdl partitions, changed
some kernel options in grub, and rebooted.

Now the problem:
Although the machine boots fine, it only finds one channel of the new
controller. Here is the output of "dmesg|grep ide":

ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with
idebus=xx
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0xd400-0xd407, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:DMA
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0xe000-0xe007, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:DMA
    ide4: BM-DMA at 0xc800-0xc807, BIOS settings: hdi:DMA, hdj:pio
    ide5: BM-DMA at 0xc808-0xc80f, BIOS settings: hdk:DMA, hdl:pio
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
ide2 at 0xcc00-0xcc07,0xd002 on irq 11
ide3 at 0xd800-0xd807,0xdc02 on irq 11
ide5 at 0xc000-0xc007,0xc402 on irq 9

So it seems that ide4 gets lost somewhere. Does anyone know how I can
force it to find the missing controller? Can I pass ide4=0x????,0x????
using the values above?

Performance of ide5 looks pretty good:
[caepdc:/home/bgmilne]# hdparm -tT /dev/hdk

/dev/hdk:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.45 seconds = 88.28 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.86 seconds = 34.41 MB/sec

This is a production machine that I can only reboot after hours ...

This should make an interesting machine to "crashtest" ...
