(Taking a deep breath to calm himself)

Um, hold on there.

Look at section "Screen" in your XF86Config (well, ok, this is from mine ;-)

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    Device "Chips & Tech ct65550"
    Monitor "Laptop Monitor"
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        # Omit the Modes line for the "Generic VGA" device
        Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1152x864" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
        # Use Virtual 320 200 for Generic VGA
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1152x864" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
...more stuff...

Its the 'modes' lines, in each 'Display' subsection, that gives you
the ability to switch to different resolutions.

I'd rather not go into an entire xf86config tutorial here (look on google
or linuxdoc or wherever for that) - but I do want to cover a few important
details.

1 - note that you (can) have more than one 'Subsection "Display"' subsection -
each one is for a different color depth.

2 - the default display subsection/color depth is chosen by that "DefaultColorDepth 16"
thingy up there.

3 - the default resolution you come up in is the first entry in the 'Modes' line,
e.g. 800x600 for both 8bit depth and 16bit depth (its an old laptop, what can I say?)

4 - switching from one screen resolution to another is (supposed to be) simply a
matter of hitting control/alt/keypad+ to go UP the list (wrapped), and
control/alt/keypad'-' to go down the list (wrapped) (at least I think it has
to be the + and - keys on the keypad...)

Yow - more than anyone wanted to know!
