Christian,
Sendmail and Postfix cannot and will not install and work on the same
system at the same time. They fight one another. You will first have to
uninstall Postfix altogether, and then install Sendmail. If you're running
Mdk 7.2 I strongly suggest using sendmail-8.9.3-20 or sendmail-8.10.x-x
because there seems to be something amiss with the version of Sendmail
that ships with Mdk 7.2.
I have used both of the versions I've mentioned above on my mandrake 7.2
system with success, but at present I am using 8.9.3-20 because it works
better with Majordomo then does 8.10. Not sure why...all I know at the
moment is that it works and I'm happy with that.
Sendmail will accept connections and perform as a mailserver just fine. I
used it as such and am able to receive mail from the internet AND connect
to it to gather the mail sent to the system. More over, I'm able to
connect to the mailserver with Netscape Messenger to both send and recieve
mail.
So, Sendmail is a very functional SMTP.
