Sorry, I meant to reply to this also.

The short answer is: generally its /dev/st0.

The longer answer is: Ask 'dmesg', if your tape was detected you should
see something like this:

Looking above, you should be able to find my 2 scsi cdrom drives, sr0 and sr1. Look
for
something similar for your tape drive. If its not detected, then you'll need to get
that
fixed first.

Once you know that its been detected, and you know its name (note that it will be
/dev/<name>), then you can use mt, as suggested above, to see if its respoding like
it should.

Then, for backups, you can do it lots of different ways. (TMTOWDI?)

using tar:

        cd /where/I/want/backed/up ; tar cf /dev/st0 .

using cpio:

        cd /where/I/want/backed/up ; find . -depth |cpio -o > /dev/st0

(Not sure if you need the '-depth' or not, I usually use tar)

using dd (dd??? what??? ;-) (dd is if you need to make an image copy)

        dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/st0 ibs=xxx obs=yyy

Note - you may need to do non-default blocking on the tar or cpio
commands - see the man page for details.
