One thing I noticed when I did my 2.4.1 compile, is that in the section on
USB support, there were a number of places to include / not include support
for a variety of USB devices. For instance, there was an item to select if
you were planning to use a USB printer. Presumably, without checking this
box, you would not be able to hook a printer up to the USB port and have it
work.

If you have installed the "cooker" RPMS for 2.4.1, you may or may not have
compiled in the proper USB support for what you want. I tend to assume you
WOULD, because my experience has generally been that the distribution kernels
have just about everything included, either as part of the kernel or as a
module. The 2.2.17 kernel that came with my mdk 7.2 install included a ton of
modules, most of which were of course irrelevant to my actual system. You
therefore may want to try a "compile your own" approach to 2.4.1 to ensure
you have everything you need compiled into the kernel or as a module.

As an aside, at first I was sort of bummed out that you actually had to
recompile the kernel if you add a new USB type of device that you didn't
allow for in the original kernel. In contrast, with windows you don't (of
course) haev to recompile...because you can't. As a result, everything comes
with a floppy or CD from which to install the USB drivers...just like
buildinga new module for the Linux kernel and insmod'ing it...except Linux is
faster, you don't have to reboot....

Any anyway, my Linux system can compile a kernel, install it, and reboot with
it as fast as my windows system can just do a reboot...
