My guess would be the ethernet cabling or the NIC.
I had a similar problem when I tried to use a 100MBS nic on
a network with shaky cabling.  At the time, I couldn't fix the
cabling and I had a spare 10MBS nic.  Installing the slower nic
fixed the problem.
