This might be a bit off-topic (well ok it is).

If i have the ip address of a host that has been, say, port-scanning me, and i want to
find out
what "ip block" it belongs to, how do i do that? I don't neccessarily mean class A, B
or C. For
example, i had the above scenario occur. I tried to find out who had authority over
that ip but
the best i could come up with was something like gt.ca. Then i wander over to my
Windows box where
i have "SamSpade" and i ask for it to come up with the ip block. It cranks out a ton of
information, and it turns out that various blocks (subnets) of that class C network
belong to
different companies and it gave me the ranges of all of those blocks. The ip in
question fell
neatly into one of those blocks. HOW DID IT FIND THAT INFORMATION OUT?? I don't want
to have to
consult my windows box every time i want to figure out who to send email to and
whether to ban any
traffic from that ip.

Thanks,
j
