Haven't tried 0.8, but this worked fine in 0.7 with the Blackdown JDK 1.3:

ln -s $JAVA_HOME/jre/plugin/i386/javaplugin.so
$MOZILLA_HOME/plugins/javaplugin.so
setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH $JAVA_HOME/jre/plugin/i386
