If your laptop is asking your desktop for an ip address and your desktop isn't 
listening, then you
would have a problem. Do you have a DHCP server running on your desktop? If you do, 
you'll need to
be more specific about your configurations.

If you don't, you might want to think about using a static connection for your laptop. 
Again, it
would be helpful to know your setup (physical setup, internal ip addresses, 
configuration, etc).
